Your first dungeon
Prepare for entry, learn your way through rooms, and understand your exit options before committing to a run.
Make preparation part of the adventure
A dungeon brings your earlier lessons together: equipment, combat, supplies, and knowing when to continue. For your first visit, choose an entrance whose requirements you meet and give yourself time to learn the rooms.
Your goal is to enter prepared, understand how to move forward, collect useful rewards, and make an informed decision about leaving.
Inspect the entrance first
Select a dungeon entrance and read its name, required level, entry item, and any cooldown. Enter Dungeon becomes available when the entry requirements are met. Meeting the minimum level allows entry; your equipment and preparation still matter inside.
Different dungeons can require different entry items. Some entrances explicitly offer free entry. Follow the information on the entrance you selected rather than assuming every dungeon uses the same rules.
If it requires a Void Compass, inspect that recipe in Crafting. The City life guide explains getting Crude Oil and refining it into Fracture Oil. The Compass uses Fracture Oil and Rift Motes; gather the amounts shown, finish crafting, and check that the Compass is in your carried inventory before returning. Keep your remaining Motes in mind when planning travel after the run.
Pack for the fights ahead
Confirm that your weapon is equipped and that your defensive gear is in good condition. Recover your health, prepare whatever healing you can use, and leave room for loot. Review Improving your equipment if your gear needs attention.
If you bring a companion, check its health, readiness, and combat stance. Carry Raw Meat for its care and review Pets and companions if the controls are still unfamiliar.
Before entering, understand the exit options described below. Do not plan a short visit around saving progress unless you have the required skill.
Enter and get your bearings
Approach the entrance and choose Enter Dungeon. Once inside, pause to identify your character, nearby enemies, doorways, and interactable objects before moving into a fight.
Explore one room at a time. Select enemies deliberately and watch their attacks while managing your own health and your companion. A new creature or boss may need a different approach from the enemies you practiced against outside.
Work through rooms and floors
Select a doorway to inspect the route. Go To Next Room moves you toward the doorway and enters when you are in range. If it says Clear the room first, finish the required encounter before trying again. A sealed route is not opened simply by repeatedly selecting it.
Inspect objects for their available actions: Open, Use Lever, Gather, or Descend, depending on what you found. Read the feedback and check the result before moving on. Descending takes the adventure farther; recover and review your supplies before continuing.
Treat unfamiliar encounters as something to learn. Watch for visible attack warnings, give yourself room to react, and reassess when a fight uses more health or supplies than you expected.
Collect before moving on
After a fight, look for dropped items and inspect chests or other rewards. Let pickup actions finish, then check your inventory. Selecting loot from a distance can involve moving into range first.
If a pickup fails, read the message and check your position and inventory before retrying. Make sure the item you wanted was collected before leaving the room.
You may also find a Skill Altar. Inspect its unlock requirements before spending resources; reaching an altar and meeting its requirements are separate steps. Use Choosing your skills to decide whether the unlock fits your plans.
Understand leaving and saving
Open the dungeon exit controls and read the available choice and confirmation carefully:
- Save & Exit preserves dungeon progress and returns you to the overworld. Saving requires Rift Walker level 1.
- Abandon & Exit returns you to the overworld and gives up dungeon progress. Read the confirmation before accepting.
A saved run is tied to a Rift Torch created when you save. Keep that Torch: it is consumed when you resume the saved run. Return to the same entrance and use Resume Dungeon while the saved run is available. Saved runs expire, so check the saved-run information before assuming you can continue it later.
If the interface reports that travel status is unavailable, use Retry Travel Status when offered and wait for the exit choices to become available.
Finish with a useful next step
After returning to the overworld, check your inventory, equipment condition, and companion status. Put what you earned toward a repair, upgrade, recipe, or skill you want to use next.
A first run is useful even if you decide you need stronger gear before going farther. Identify what limited you, prepare for it, and return with a clear goal.
